Global Driving
Simulator Market Opportunities:
Driving simulators play an important role in the
research and development of autonomous and semiautonomous vehicles. They are
most frequently used in testing autonomous driving systems; Simulation is used
to play back sensor data that cars collect in the real world, and re-verifies
if the vehicle’s driving software system handles the situation ensuring safety
to the passengers. Many established companies and start-ups have begun
experimenting in terms of research and development of driving simulators.
Products such as Waymo’s Carcraft are capable of building road networks
virtually, and create situations in which the self-driving car is surrounded by
other vehicles, cars, bicycles and pedestrians. Simulators focusing on
supporting development of autonomous cars are expected to gain popularity in
the coming years.
In March 2019, Nvidia announced their Drive
Constellation autonomous vehicle simulation system which is ready for testing
by automotive manufacturers. They announced the availability of its data center
simulator for testing self-driving autonomous technologies. Drive Constellation
is essentially an open cloud based platform which vendors can use to validate
performance of the systems with more accuracy and efficiency than vehicles on
real roads.
Growing awareness about the dangers of testing
unfinished self-driving vehicles and unproven technology on road is also
expected to boost demand for driving simulators in the global market. Further in March 2019, Toyota announced that
it will be the first customer of Nvidia’s new Drive Constellation testing
platform. Toyota currently uses the Nvidia Drive AGX Xavier computers in its
vehicle testing, and plan to collaborate on artificial intelligence computing
for self-driving cars. Some of the major automotive industry manufacturers
involved in use of driving simulators for vehicle testing are Audi, BMW,
Daimler, Ford and Honda among others.

Global Driving Simulator Market Challenges:
One of the challenges faced by the driving
simulator market is the lack of fidelity in low cost simulators. Simulator
fidelity plays an important role in affecting user behavior in driving
simulators. In some circumstances, users may prefer using a real vehicle to
driving simulator to produce efficient observations. Investing in resources to
improve the quality of the driving simulator is not necessarily the solution to
the issue, as it can add complexity to the existing systems. Use of low
fidelity driving simulators may create deviant and unreliable results which may
lead to dangerous consequences considering the end use of driving simulator
systems.
